About This Mikumi Safari by SGR Train

This 2-day safari is the quickest way to see Tanzanian wildlife from Dar es Salaam, and it suits families well. Instead of a long drive out of the city, you take the electric SGR train to Morogoro, where your guide meets you and drives you to Mikumi National Park, about two hours away. After an afternoon game drive and a night near the park, you have a morning game drive before heading back to Morogoro for the train. It costs $900 per person.

Mikumi's open grasslands around the Mkata floodplain make animals easy to spot, which is why it is often compared with the Serengeti. Elephants, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest and impala are common, lions are seen regularly, and hippos gather in the pools.

It is a good extension after a Zanzibar beach holiday or before a flight home from Dar es Salaam. To add a hike in the Uluguru Mountains, see our 3-day Mikumi and Uluguru family tour.

Is This Tour Good for Families?

Yes. The train ride is a highlight in itself for children, drives between the sights are short compared with the northern circuit, and the pace leaves time to rest. We adapt walking distances to your children's ages and fitness. The game drives are in a vehicle, so even young children can join.

  • Tell us your children's ages when you book, so we can plan the right walks and rooms
  • Pack sun hats, closed shoes and a light rain jacket for each child
  • Ask us about prices for children and family rooms

What Should You Bring?

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip, and sandals for the evenings
  • Light clothing in layers, plus a warm top for cool mornings and evenings
  • A light rain jacket, especially from November to May
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Swimwear if you would like to swim at a waterfall pool
  • A small daypack, a refillable water bottle and binoculars
  • Your passport for the train, and some cash in Tanzanian shillings for tips and small purchases

When Is the Best Time to Go?

MonthsWhat to expect
June – OctoberDry and cooler: the best time for game drives and the easiest hiking
November – DecemberShort rains; green landscapes, waterfalls flowing well
January – FebruaryWarm and mostly dry; a good second window for hiking
March – MayLong rains; forest trails are slippery and some tracks muddy

Waterfalls are at their fullest after the rains, while game viewing in Mikumi is best in the dry season, when animals gather near water.
