About This Mikumi and Uluguru Family Tour
This 3-day tour combines two very different sides of the Morogoro region: the green Uluguru Mountains and the wildlife of Mikumi National Park. You travel from Dar es Salaam on the SGR train, hike to Choma Waterfalls on the first day, then spend two days on game drives in Mikumi before taking the train back. It costs $1,350 per person.
The Uluguru walk takes you through forest and hillside farms to a waterfall pool, with a visit to a Luguru village. In Mikumi, the open grasslands make elephants, giraffe, zebra, buffalo and lions easy to spot, which makes it an ideal first safari for children.
It suits families and travellers extending a Zanzibar holiday or a business trip to Dar es Salaam. For a shorter trip, see the 2-day Mikumi safari by SGR train; for more, add Udzungwa on the 4-day tour.

Getting There from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar
| Starting from | How you travel | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|
| Dar es Salaam | We take you to the SGR station for the electric train to Morogoro | About 1.5–2 hours by train |
| Zanzibar | Short flight or fast ferry to Dar es Salaam, then the SGR train | About 20 minutes by air or 2 hours by ferry, plus the train |
| Morogoro station | Your guide meets you with our private vehicle | — |
The early express train usually leaves Dar es Salaam at 6:00 AM, and trains are often full, so we book your seats in advance. Train times change from time to time; we confirm yours when we book. If you are coming from Zanzibar, we can book your flight or ferry to Dar es Salaam too (not included in the price).
Is This Tour Good for Families?
Yes. The train ride is a highlight in itself for children, drives between the sights are short compared with the northern circuit, and the pace leaves time to rest. We adapt walking distances to your children's ages and fitness. The Choma walk is moderate; we can shorten it for younger children.
- Tell us your children's ages when you book, so we can plan the right walks and rooms
- Pack sun hats, closed shoes and a light rain jacket for each child
- Ask us about prices for children and family rooms
What Should You Bring?
- Comfortable walking shoes with good grip, and sandals for the evenings
- Light clothing in layers, plus a warm top for cool mornings and evenings
- A light rain jacket, especially from November to May
- Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent
- Swimwear if you would like to swim at a waterfall pool
- A small daypack, a refillable water bottle and binoculars
- Your passport for the train, and some cash in Tanzanian shillings for tips and small purchases
When Is the Best Time to Go?
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| June – October | Dry and cooler: the best time for game drives and the easiest hiking |
| November – December | Short rains; green landscapes, waterfalls flowing well |
| January – February | Warm and mostly dry; a good second window for hiking |
| March – May | Long rains; forest trails are slippery and some tracks muddy |
Waterfalls are at their fullest after the rains, while game viewing in Mikumi is best in the dry season, when animals gather near water.
