Why Choose Morogoro for a Family Trip or an Extension?

  • Easy to reach: the SGR train takes about 1.5–2 hours from Dar es Salaam, with no internal flights
  • Short distances: Mikumi is about two hours from Morogoro, so children spend less time in the vehicle
  • Variety: mountain hikes, waterfalls, village visits and a safari in a few days
  • Quieter parks: fewer vehicles than the northern circuit
  • Finishes near the airport: every tour ends in Dar es Salaam, close to the international airport

The Places You Will Visit

Uluguru Mountains

The Ulugurus rise straight above Morogoro town. They are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, whose forests hold plants and animals found nowhere else, and they are farmed by the Luguru people. The walk to Choma Waterfalls is the classic family outing; higher peaks such as Lupanga and Bondwa, both over 2,100 metres, make longer hikes. See our 1-day Uluguru and Choma Waterfalls hike.

Mikumi National Park

About two hours from Morogoro, Mikumi's open grasslands around the Mkata floodplain make elephants, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest and hippos easy to see, and lions are seen regularly. It is an excellent first safari for children. See our 2-day Mikumi safari by SGR train.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

A rainforest park about an hour or so beyond Mikumi, best known for the hike to Sanje Waterfalls, which drop about 170 metres, and for primates found nowhere else, such as the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey. See our 4-day Uluguru, Mikumi and Udzungwa tour.

Which Tour Suits You?

When Is the Best Time to Visit Morogoro?

June to October is dry and cooler, the best time for game drives in Mikumi and for hiking. January and February are a good second window. The short rains of November and December bring green landscapes and full waterfalls, while the long rains from March to May make forest trails slippery. For more on seasons across the country, read the best time for a Tanzania safari.

Extending Your Tanzania Trip

Because every tour starts and ends in Dar es Salaam, a Morogoro tour fits neatly before or after the rest of your trip: after a beach stay with our Zanzibar packages, after a northern safari from our Tanzania safaris, or as a gentle warm-up hike before climbing Kilimanjaro. If you are based in Zanzibar and prefer to fly straight to the bush, see our safaris from Zanzibar.
