About This 5-Day Morogoro Region Tour

This 5-day tour takes in the three highlights of the Morogoro region: the Uluguru Mountains above Morogoro town, the wildlife of Mikumi National Park and the rainforest and waterfalls of Udzungwa. You travel to Morogoro and back on the electric SGR train from Dar es Salaam and spend the rest of the trip with your own guide and vehicle. It costs $2,250 per person.

The 5-day version adds a full day in Mikumi, so the pace stays relaxed for younger children, with time to rest at your lodge between game drives.

Udzungwa is a mountain rainforest park about an hour or so from Mikumi. The hike to Sanje Waterfalls, which drop about 170 metres, takes about four to five hours there and back on a steep, humid trail, and a park guide accompanies every group. The forest is home to primates found nowhere else, including the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey.

For a faster trip with the same sights, see the 4-day Uluguru, Mikumi and Udzungwa tour. Want a river safari too? Ask us about adding Nyerere National Park.

Is This Tour Good for Families?

Yes. The train ride is a highlight in itself for children, drives between the sights are short compared with the northern circuit, and the pace leaves time to rest. We adapt walking distances to your children's ages and fitness.

  • Tell us your children's ages when you book, so we can plan the right walks and rooms
  • Pack sun hats, closed shoes and a light rain jacket for each child
  • Ask us about prices for children and family rooms

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip, and sandals for the evenings
  • Light clothing in layers, plus a warm top for cool mornings and evenings

MonthsWhat to expect
June – OctoberDry and cooler: the best time for game drives and the easiest hiking
November – DecemberShort rains; green landscapes, waterfalls flowing well
January – FebruaryWarm and mostly dry; a good second window for hiking
March – MayLong rains; forest trails are slippery and some tracks muddy

Waterfalls are at their fullest after the rains, while game viewing in Mikumi is best in the dry season, when animals gather near water.
