How This 7-Day Zanzibar Itinerary Works

What is there to do in Zanzibar for a week? More than most travellers expect. Seven days gives you time to walk Stone Town's carved-door lanes, eat grilled octopus at a waterfront market at dusk, snorkel over a coral reef and still spend days on beaches on opposite sides of the island. A four-day trip usually means choosing between Stone Town and a beach base; a week lets you have both.

This itinerary follows the routing our team uses when we design custom Zanzibar weeks: two nights in Stone Town, two on the north coast at Nungwi or Kendwa, and two on the east coast at Paje or Jambiani. Each base unlocks different experiences: history, food and day trips in Stone Town; calm water, snorkelling trips and sunset dhow cruises in the north; and the tidal lagoon, kitesurfing and a laid-back café scene in the east.

We can build this week for you, with transfers, excursions and accommodation arranged across all three bases, or you can use it as a plan for travelling independently. If you prefer one base, our 5-day packages keep you in our private villa throughout.

7-Day Zanzibar Itinerary — Day by Day

Stone Town first, then the north coast, then the east coast: a routing that keeps travel time short. Transfer times are approximate.

  • Day 1
Stone Town · Arrival and the Old City on Foot

The airport is 15–25 minutes from Stone Town. Drop your bags and start walking: Darajani Market, the Old Fort, the outside of the Sultan's Palace and the carved-door lanes of the UNESCO-listed old town. In the evening, head to Forodhani Gardens, the waterfront food market, for Zanzibar pizza, urojo soup, mishkaki skewers and fresh sugarcane juice. Night in Stone Town.

  • Day 2
Stone Town · Spice Farm and Stone Town's Deeper History

A spice farm tour fits neatly into the morning because the farms are just outside town; most tours take three to five hours and show cloves, vanilla, nutmeg and ylang-ylang. After lunch, visit the former slave market and Christ Church Cathedral, one of East Africa's most important historical sites. A sunset dhow cruise from the Stone Town waterfront is a good optional finish. Night in Stone Town.

  • Day 3
North Coast · Prison Island, Then Nungwi by Sunset

Take the morning boat trip to Prison Island to see the giant Aldabra tortoises and the ruins of the old quarantine station; allow three to five hours in total. After a quick lunch in Stone Town, drive north to Nungwi (about 1–1.5 hours) in time to walk the beach and watch the sunset. Night on the north coast.

  • Day 4
North Coast · Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll

Spend the morning snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine conservation area with clear water and healthy coral. Dolphins are sometimes seen, but treat them as a bonus rather than a promise. Morning departures usually have the best conditions. Spend the afternoon on the beach at Nungwi or Kendwa, with an optional sunset dhow cruise. Night on the north coast.

  • Day 5
East Coast · Jozani Forest and the Move South

Leave early: Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park lies roughly between the north and east coasts, and the red colobus monkeys are most active in the morning. The forest walk takes one and a half to three hours. Continue to Paje, 30–40 minutes further; the whole journey, including Jozani, takes about two to two and a half hours. Check the tide chart at your hotel on arrival. Night on the east coast.

  • Day 6
East Coast · Safari Blue, Kitesurfing or a Slow Day

Commit to one main activity. Safari Blue is a full-day dhow trip from the south-west coast with a sandbank stop, snorkelling and a seafood lunch, with an early start and a short drive from Paje. Paje is also one of East Africa's best places for a first kitesurfing lesson. For a slower day, visit Jambiani village or book a table at The Rock Restaurant, which is set on a rock in the sea and works around the tides. Night on the east coast.

  • Day 7
    Departure

Paje to the airport takes about 1–1.5 hours, so plan your transfer around your flight time.

How Should You Structure a Week in Zanzibar?

The most effective week uses three bases. Moving between two beach bases means repacking twice, but you experience the full character of the island rather than a single postcard version of it.

BaseNightsBest for
Stone Town2 (Days 1–2)History, food and day excursions
North coast: Nungwi or Kendwa2 (Days 3–4)Calm water, snorkelling trips and sunset dhow cruises
East coast: Paje or Jambiani2 (Days 5–6)The tidal lagoon, kitesurfing and a relaxed café scene

Nungwi, Kendwa or Paje: Which Beach Base?

BeachChoose it for
NungwiFirst visits: reliable swimming, plenty of restaurants and easy access to boat trips
KendwaFamilies and anyone who wants calm water; just around the headland from Nungwi and swimmable for most of the day
PajeKitesurfing: a shallow lagoon, strong trade winds and a social, younger café scene

The east coast tides are significant: at low tide the sea can pull back several hundred metres, so plan swims around the tide chart your hotel gives you. Our Zanzibar beach guide compares every coast.

Who Is This Itinerary For?

  • Relaxation first: skip the second beach base, stay four nights at Nungwi or Kendwa, and visit Jozani and the south as day trips
  • Adventure travellers: book Safari Blue, Mnemba Atoll and a kitesurfing lesson before you arrive
  • Culture lovers: add a third night in Stone Town for a slower look at the slave trade history sites, the Palace Museum and the food scene

Where and What to Eat in Stone Town

Forodhani Gardens is the essential first evening: order Zanzibar pizza (a thin, pan-fried parcel filled with egg, meat or vegetables), urojo soup, mishkaki skewers and sugarcane juice. Lukmaan Restaurant is the local favourite for inexpensive Zanzibari cooking such as pilau, biryani, octopus curry and chapati; the octopus curry is worth ordering. For slower meals, the rooftop and courtyard restaurants of the old town have the atmosphere, and Zanzibar Coffee House is good for daytime coffee and pastries.

How Long Does Getting Around Take?

RouteApproximate time
Airport to Stone Town15–25 minutes
Stone Town to Nungwi1 hour 15 minutes – 1 hour 30 minutes

Private transfers are the most reliable way to move between bases with luggage. Shared shuttles are cheaper but add stops, and dala-dalas (local minibuses) are slow and usually require a change in Stone Town between the north and east coasts.

Questions About a Week in Zanzibar

What is there to do in Zanzibar for a week?

In seven days you can explore Stone Town and its food market, visit a spice farm, see the giant tortoises on Prison Island, snorkel at Mnemba Atoll, walk among the red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest, and spend time on both the north and east coasts, with Safari Blue or kitesurfing on Day 6.

Is a week too long in Zanzibar?

No. A week lets you see Stone Town and two different beach areas without rushing. With four days you usually have to choose between Stone Town and a beach base.

Where should I stay for a week in Zanzibar?

Use three bases: two nights in Stone Town, two on the north coast at Nungwi or Kendwa, and two on the east coast at Paje or Jambiani. If you prefer not to move, stay four nights on the north coast and visit other areas as day trips.

Nungwi, Kendwa or Paje: which is best?

Nungwi suits first-time visitors who want reliable swimming and restaurants, Kendwa suits families who want calm water, and Paje is best for kitesurfing and a relaxed café scene. The east coast has a large tidal range, so plan swims around the tide.

How much does a week in Zanzibar cost?

Budget roughly $50–$100 per person per activity day for shared excursions, plus accommodation from about $25–$80 a night in budget lodges to $250–$600 or more in luxury resorts. Peak season is more expensive.

What should I book in advance?

Book Mnemba Atoll snorkelling, Safari Blue and The Rock Restaurant ahead, at least two to four weeks in peak season and one to three months ahead for July and August. Stone Town tours, the spice farm and Prison Island can usually be arranged with short notice.

How do you get around Zanzibar?

Private transfers are the most reliable way to move between bases with luggage. Stone Town to Nungwi takes about 1–1.5 hours, and Nungwi to Paje about 1.5–2 hours.

Can Livingwell arrange the whole week?

Yes. We build custom Zanzibar weeks to your pace, interests and budget, including transfers, excursions and accommodation across all three bases. Send us your dates and we will prepare a quote.

Can I add a safari to a week in Zanzibar?

Yes. A short fly-in safari fits well before or after your beach days. See our 2-day, 3-day, 4-day and 5-day safaris from Zanzibar.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations made more than 7 days before the start date receive a full refund. Cancellations within 7 days may incur a partial fee, depending on bookings already made on your behalf, such as flights and camps. We recommend travel insurance.
