How a 3-Day Safari from Zanzibar Works
You have spent a few days on Zanzibar and have three days left. Is that enough to get into the bush? It is. A 3-day Tanzania safari from Zanzibar is one of the most rewarding combinations in East African travel, and the logistics are simpler than most travellers expect. The key decisions are which park, how you get there and what you will see.
There are two good options. The southern circuit flies you to Nyerere National Park (formerly the Selous), where game drives and a Rufiji River boat safari fill two full days and you are back on the beach for a late lunch on Day 3. The northern circuit flies you to Arusha for Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, the widest wildlife sweep and the best chance of the Big Five, with more driving on the last day.
Zanzibar-to-mainland combinations are at the heart of what we do. We bundle the flights, transfers, park fees and camps into one quote, so you step off the beach and into a game vehicle without arranging connections yourself. Option 1: Nyerere National Park in 3 Days
The shortest flight, two kinds of safari and your whole first afternoon in the park.
-
Day 1Fly to Nyerere · Afternoon Game Drive
Take a morning flight from Zanzibar to a Nyerere airstrip (typically around 8:00 AM, landing about an hour and a quarter later). Your guide meets you at the airstrip and the afternoon game drive begins straight away, focusing on elephant and lion country along the Rufiji floodplain.
-
Day 2Game Drive and Rufiji River Boat Safari
The heart of the trip. A morning game drive covers predator territory while activity is highest, then a midday rest at camp before an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River, where hippos surface metres from the boat, crocodiles line the banks and the birdlife is outstanding.
-
Day 3Early Drive · Fly Back to Zanzibar
An early morning drive for predators before 10:00 AM, then the flight back to Zanzibar in time for a late lunch on the beach.
Option 2: Tarangire and Ngorongoro in 3 Days
The widest wildlife sweep and the best chance of the Big Five, with more road time on Day 3.
-
Day 1Fly to Arusha · Afternoon in Tarangire
Fly from Zanzibar to Arusha (about 1–1.5 hours), then drive to Tarangire National Park for an afternoon game drive. Elephant herds here can number in the hundreds, and the ancient baobabs make some of Tanzania's most photogenic safari scenery.
-
Day 2Full Day in Ngorongoro Crater
Descend to the crater floor for a full-day game drive. The caldera walls hold a concentrated, resident wildlife population, so your odds are high: lion, elephant, buffalo and black rhino all live here. For a short trip, this is the best single day of Big Five viewing in Tanzania.
-
Day 3Lake Manyara · Fly Back to Zanzibar
A morning stop at Lake Manyara for its tree-climbing lions and flamingo-lined shore, then the drive back to Arusha and the flight to Zanzibar. You land later in the afternoon than on the southern option.
Which Parks Make Sense for a 3-Day Safari from Zanzibar?
On a short trip the best park is the one that gives you the most game-drive time for the least travel. That is where the southern and northern circuits differ.
| Park | Getting there from Zanzibar | Highlights | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nyerere (Selous) | Scheduled flight to a park airstrip, about 45–75 minutes depending on routing | Lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, a real chance of African wild dog; boat safaris | No rhino |
| Mikumi | Ferry to Dar es Salaam (about 90 minutes), then about 4–5 hours by road | Open Mkata Floodplain with elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo in plain sight | No rhino; less variety than Nyerere |
| Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara | Flight to Arusha (about 1–1.5 hours), then road transfers | Elephant herds, the Big Five in Ngorongoro Crater, tree-climbing lions and flamingos | More road time; later return on Day 3 |
If seeing the Great Migration is your priority, a Serengeti and Ngorongoro pairing is the premium northern upgrade, but it costs more and needs more flying time. See our Serengeti safaris.
Should You Fly or Take the Ferry?
On a three-day safari, every hour in transit is an hour not watching wildlife, so fly. Scheduled small aircraft, typically six to twelve seats, connect Zanzibar with Arusha and the southern park airstrips, and a morning departure puts you on a game drive by early afternoon.
| Route | Time | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Fly Zanzibar → Nyerere airstrip | About 45–75 minutes | Best for 3 days |
| Fly Zanzibar → Arusha | About 1–1.5 hours, then road to the parks | Good for the northern circuit |
| Ferry to Dar es Salaam + road to Mikumi | About 90 minutes + 4–5 hours | Budget option only |
| Ferry + road to Arusha or the Serengeti | 8–10 hours from Dar to Arusha; 18–24 hours to the Serengeti | Not practical for 3 days |
What Wildlife Can You Expect to See?
A safari works on honesty, not guarantees. This is what is likely in each park.
| Park | Likely | Possible | Absent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ngorongoro Crater | Lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino | Leopard (seen more often here than in most parks) | — |
| Nyerere | Lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, crocodile | African wild dog, leopard | Rhino |
| Mikumi | Elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo | Lion | Rhino |
If completing the Big Five is your main goal, choose the northern option with Ngorongoro Crater.
When Is the Best Time for a Safari from Zanzibar?
The dry season from June to October is the most reliable time to see wildlife in every park: vegetation thins, animals gather near water and the tracks are passable all day. Late June and September combine dry-season sightings with slightly lower prices than the July–August peak.
January and February bring the calving season to the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, with peak predator activity, but that needs a longer northern trip. Mara River crossings need time in the northern Serengeti that a three-day trip rarely allows; budget four days or more. See the best time for a Tanzania safari.
Bush-Flight Baggage Rules and What to Confirm
Scheduled safari flights allow 15 kg per person in total, including hand luggage and camera gear, in a soft-sided bag; hard suitcases and wheeled bags are not accepted. Some airlines offer an extra allowance of about 30 kg, which must be booked in advance. The easy solution is to leave your main suitcase at your Zanzibar hotel; confirm any storage arrangements before you check out.
Four Things to Confirm Before You Book
- Exactly what the price includes: flights, park fees, meals, transfers, and whether the vehicle is private or shared
- The soft-bag rule and the baggage allowance for each flight
- The deposit, the cancellation policy and the flexibility if your Zanzibar dates change
- A 24-hour contact number for when you are in Tanzania

Questions About a 3-Day Safari from Zanzibar
Yes. If you fly, you can be on a game drive on the afternoon of Day 1, have a full day in the park on Day 2 and an early drive on Day 3 before flying back to Zanzibar.
Nyerere wins on logistics: a shorter flight, game drives plus a boat safari, and your whole first afternoon in the park. Choose Tarangire and Ngorongoro if you want the widest wildlife sweep and the best chance of the Big Five, with more driving on Day 3.
From about $1,200–$1,400 per person on a budget, with a shared vehicle and basic camp; $1,400–$2,600 mid-range, with a private vehicle and an en-suite tented camp; and $1,700–$3,500 or more for luxury fly-in camps and a private guide. Flights between Zanzibar and the park are included.
About 45–75 minutes to a Nyerere airstrip, depending on routing, and about 1–1.5 hours to Arusha for the northern parks.
Only for Mikumi, which is about 4–5 hours by road from Dar es Salaam after a 90-minute ferry. For every other park, the ferry and road add too much travel for a three-day trip.
Ngorongoro Crater gives you the best chance on a short trip: lion, elephant, buffalo and black rhino are seen fairly consistently, and leopard sometimes. Nyerere and Mikumi have no rhino.
15 kg per person in total, including hand luggage, in a soft-sided bag. Leave your main suitcase at your Zanzibar hotel.
June to October, the dry season, is the most reliable time for wildlife in every park. Late June and September offer good sightings with slightly lower prices than July and August.
Yes. Most guests add the safari before or after their beach days. See our 7-day Zanzibar itinerary or our Zanzibar packages.
Cancellations made more than 7 days before the start date receive a full refund. Cancellations within 7 days may incur a partial fee, depending on bookings already made on your behalf, such as flights and camps. We recommend travel insurance.
