How Many Days Do You Need for a Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar?

Giraffes on the plains in Tanzania

Quick answer

Three days is the sweet spot for most beach holidays: fly in, spend a full day in the park and fly back. Two days works for Nyerere or Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Four to five days adds Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, and seven days or more covers the full northern circuit and the Great Migration.

Zanzibar is a short flight from Tanzania's safari parks, so you can add a safari to almost any beach holiday. The right length depends on how far you are willing to fly and how many parks you want to see. This guide shows what fits into each number of days.

Which Parks Are Best for a 2-Day Safari?

With two days, choose a park close to an airstrip. Nyerere is the shortest flight from Zanzibar and adds a boat safari on the Rufiji River. Tarangire and Lake Manyara, via Arusha, give you two very different parks. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are better with four days or more. See our 2-day safari from Zanzibar.

Why Three Days Is the Sweet Spot

Three days lets you fly in on Day 1 and be on a game drive that afternoon, spend all of Day 2 in the park and fly back on Day 3. In Nyerere you can add a river boat safari; in the north you can see Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. Read the full plans on our 3-day safari from Zanzibar page.

The Best 7-Day Safari Itineraries from Zanzibar

Option A: Serengeti and Ngorongoro in 7 days

Based on our 7-day Serengeti migration safari, with flights from Zanzibar. The route follows the herds, so it suits travellers who want the Great Migration.

DayPlan
1Fly from Zanzibar to Arusha and continue to the Serengeti
2Full day in the central Serengeti
3Serengeti Western Corridor
4Northern Serengeti and the Mara River
5Northern Serengeti exploration
6Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
7Ngorongoro to Arusha and the flight to Zanzibar

Option B: Safari and beach in 7 days

Combine our 3-day safari from Zanzibar with four days on the island: for example, three nights at the beach after your safari, or our 4-day Zanzibar packages. For a full week on the island alone, see our 7-day Zanzibar itinerary.

Can You Do 8 or 10 Days from Zanzibar?

Yes. With eight to ten days you can combine the northern circuit with Nyerere in the south, or spend five to seven days on safari and the rest on the beach. For an affordable 10-day trip, choose budget camps, a shared vehicle and travel in the shoulder months of November, January or February.

We build all-inclusive itineraries of eight days or more with flights, park fees, camps and meals in one price. See our safari cost guide for typical prices.

Can You Join a Group Safari from Zanzibar?

Our safaris are private, with your own guide and vehicle. Shared-vehicle departures, where you join other travellers, cost less per person but follow fixed dates and a set route. If you would like a shared safari, for example a 6-day group trip, tell us your dates and we will advise what is available.

Safari First or Beach First?

Both work. Many travellers start with the safari and finish on the beach to relax after early game drives. If you are already in Zanzibar, a safari in the middle of your stay works well too: leave your main luggage at your hotel, take a soft bag on the flight and come back to the same room.

If you are coming from a mainland safari, read our guide to combining a safari with Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for a safari from Zanzibar?

Three days is enough for most travellers. Two days works for Nyerere or Tarangire and Lake Manyara, and four to five days adds Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.

Can I do a safari from Zanzibar in one day?

Only to Nyerere or Saadani, as a fly-in day with an early start. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are too far for a day trip.

Which parks are best for a 2-day safari from Zanzibar?

Nyerere, for the shortest flight and a river boat safari, or Tarangire and Lake Manyara via Arusha.

Is 5 days enough for the Serengeti?

Yes. Five days covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and a full day in the Serengeti, with a flight back to Zanzibar from the Serengeti.

What is the best 7-day safari from Zanzibar?

For wildlife, a 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari following the Great Migration. For a mix of bush and beach, a 3-day safari followed by four days in Zanzibar.

Can I join a group safari from Zanzibar?

Yes. Shared-vehicle safaris cost less per person but follow fixed dates. Our own safaris are private; ask us about shared departures for your dates.

Should I do the safari before or after the beach?

Either works. Many people end on the beach to relax, but a safari in the middle of a Zanzibar stay is easy if you leave your main luggage at your hotel.
