Elephant feeding on grass in Tanzania

Quick answer

Choose how many days and which parks, then book the flights, park fees, guide and camps through one licensed operator. US citizens need a Tanzanian visa (about $100, multiple entry), Zanzibar's mandatory visitor insurance and a passport valid for at least six months. Pack light: bush flights allow about 15 kg in a soft bag.

A safari from Zanzibar is easy to organise once you know the steps. This guide walks you through booking, choosing a reputable operator, the vehicles you will travel in, the entry rules for US citizens and what to pack.

How to Book a Safari from Zanzibar, Step by Step

  1. Choose the length and parks. Our guide to how many days you need helps you decide.
  2. Send your dates, group size and budget. Include your Zanzibar hotel and any flights you have already booked.
  3. Receive an itinerary and one quote. It should list the flights, park fees, camps, meals and vehicle.
  4. Confirm and pay the deposit. Your operator then books the flights and camps.
  5. Prepare your documents. Visa, Zanzibar insurance and travel insurance (see below).
  6. Travel. You are collected from your hotel for the flight, met at the airstrip by your guide and brought back to Zanzibar at the end.

How to Choose a Reputable Safari Operator

  • Licensing. Tour operators in Tanzania must hold a tourism business licence. Ask for it.
  • Clear inclusions. A good quote states exactly what is included, including flights, park fees and the Ngorongoro crater fee.
  • Private or shared. The quote should say whether the vehicle is private or shared with other travellers.
  • Local presence. An operator based in Tanzania can adjust plans quickly if a flight is delayed or a road closes.
  • Independent reviews. Read recent reviews on independent platforms.
  • 24-hour support. You should have a phone number that works around the clock while you are in Tanzania.
  • Straight answers. If questions about inclusions, deposits or cancellation get vague replies, take that as a warning sign.

What Safari Vehicles Are Used?

Safaris in Tanzania use four-wheel-drive vehicles, usually Toyota Land Cruisers, with a pop-up roof so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. Each guest normally has a window seat. Our private safaris use a 4x4 with a pop-up roof for your group only. In Nyerere, game drives may use open-sided vehicles provided by the camp, and you can also take a boat safari on the Rufiji River.

Visa and Entry Requirements for US Citizens

  • One visa covers Zanzibar and the mainland. You do not need a separate visa for the safari.
  • Tanzanian visa: US citizens receive a multiple-entry tourist visa, about $100. Apply online through the official Tanzanian eVisa portal before you travel.
  • Passport: valid for at least six months after you arrive, with blank pages for stamps.
  • Zanzibar travel insurance: since October 2024, visitors to Zanzibar must buy the government's mandatory travel insurance, which you can purchase online before you arrive.
  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required only if you arrive from, or have spent time in, a country with a risk of yellow fever.
  • Your own travel insurance: we strongly recommend a policy that covers safari activities and medical evacuation.

Check before you travel: entry rules and fees change. Confirm the current requirements with the official Tanzanian immigration website and the US State Department shortly before your trip.

Safari Packing List

Bush flights allow about 15 kg per person in a soft bag, so pack light. Our guide to safari flights from Zanzibar explains the baggage rules.

Clothing

  • Neutral colours such as khaki, green and beige; bright white shows the dust, and dark blue or black can attract tsetse flies
  • Layers: mornings and evenings are cool, especially at Ngorongoro, which sits at about 2,300 metres
  • A warm fleece or jacket, a sun hat and a light rain jacket in the wet season
  • Comfortable closed shoes and sandals for camp

Gear and personal items

  • Binoculars, one pair per person if possible
  • A camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm and insect repellent
  • A headlamp or small torch
  • Personal medication and a small first-aid kit
  • Copies of your passport, visa and insurance documents

Planning a Safari Right After a Beach Stay

If you are already in Zanzibar, a safari fits easily into your stay. Leave your main luggage at your hotel, take a soft bag on the flight and book your hotel room again for your return. Allow time between your last game drive and any international flight home. Most of our safaris from Zanzibar start with a morning flight, so you are on a game drive the same afternoon.
